NEW YORK; New York.-A stalker who claims that the pop star Taylor Swift communicating with him on social media was arrested and charged with a burglary charge after attempting to break into the singer’s Manhattan apartment, police said Monday.
Hanks JohnsonThe 52-year-old was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Saturday after a person called 911 to report he was inside the Swift building in Tribeca without permission, a police spokesman said.
According to a criminal complaint against her, Johnson told police: “She knows I’m coming here, we’re friends.”
A Swift security employee told police that Johnson had rung the bell and tried to enter the building at least five times in the past six months, according to the complaint. The security guard said he had personally told Johnson that he was not welcome there.
Johnson was charged with burglary and was released on his own recognizance after an arraignment Sunday night. It was unclear if he had an attorney who could comment.
The diario The Daily News reported that outside of court, Johnson made a show of direct messaging Swift on Instagram and claimed that the predictive text suggestions on his phone were responses from her.
He also showed a restraining order that prevents him from contacting the models Bella y Gigi Hadid, who are friends with Swift, the newspaper noted.
Swift, who is back at the top of the charts with the new recording of her 2008 album “Fearless,” has been plagued over the years by stalkers at home on both coasts of the United States. Another man was arrested for breaking into his New York apartment in 2018 and taking a nap, police said.
