The Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt / Main will not take place on June 27th as planned. The traditionally top-ranked race of 3.82 kilometers of swimming, 180.2 kilometers of cycling and 42.2 kilometers of running has been postponed to August 15. The reasons are the ongoing corona pandemic with the resulting restrictions, according to a statement from Ironman on Tuesday.
The organizers hope that the event in August “can take place under better conditions”. Last year, the race had to be canceled as well as the World Cup in Hawaii planned for October 2020. And also this year some Ironman triathlon events over the long or half the distance had to be canceled or postponed, including some races in Spain.
Superstar Jan Frodeno won the last Ironman 2019 in Frankfurt / Main and thus defended his title from the previous year. For the Hessian local hero Patrick Lange, it has not yet been enough to win his home race.
Three-time world champion Frodeno and two-time champion Lange will meet this Saturday at the Challenge Gran Canaria over 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21 kilometers of running.
