According to a police report, officers first encountered the suspect while driving a vehicle with stolen license plates, which he ran over. Police were then informed that the same suspect had been involved in an armed hijacking.
Officers chased the stolen vehicle, and at around 3 p.m., the suspect reportedly fired at police several times before crashing into Highway 13 near Interstate 35W and continuing to shoot at police. Several police responded, hitting the suspect.
The suspect, a man believed to be in his 20s, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No officer was injured.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Arrest has dispatched officers to the crime scene and is investigating.
Police said all officers in Burnsville wear body cameras and all camera data will be processed during the BCA’s investigation.
