(ANSA) – TORONTO, 18 APR – Canadian health authorities have identified a second case of blood clots with a low platelet count after the administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine, continuing to recommend its use.

The rare event – they specified – was observed in a person residing in the province of Alberta (west), who received the version of the AstraZeneca vaccine developed by the Serum Institute of India, health authorities wrote on Twitter.

“The person has received treatment and is recovering,” they said.

Last Tuesday a first case was reported in a Quebec citizen who had received the same vaccine.

Blood clot formations as a result of the AstraZeneca vaccine “remain very rare” and Canada “continues to see benefits from vaccines for protection against Covid-19 that outweigh the potential risks,” health authorities said.

Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada will continue to closely monitor the use of all Covid-19 vaccines and will review and assess any safety concerns,” they added.

In late March, the National Immunization Advisory Committee recommended that provinces stop using the AstraZeneca vaccine in people under 55 years of age to assess its risks.

After a slow start, the vaccination campaign is gathering momentum in Canada.

To date, 23.3% of the Canadian population has received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to the Covid-19 Tracker Canada website.

But at the same time, the country faces a third wave of infections, forcing the provinces to tighten containment measures. (ANSA).
