A major fire broke out this Saturday in a company that treats green waste in Lherm. The fumes bother the population.
A major fire broke out on Saturday afternoon at the Gajan company, located on route de Rieumes in Lherm, which treats green waste from the Cœur de Garonne community.
A pile of compost ignited, the temperature of the piled up plants was important. With the help of the wind, the fire spread to the heaps of neighboring plants which were also intended to be transformed into compost.
Everything happened really fast. Someone from the company had just finished a tour of the depot. Alerted after 3 pm by fumaroles, she quickly warns Philippe Gajan, manager of the SARL.
Intervention of Muret firefighters
Understanding that they will not be able to limit the outbreak of fire on their own, they call in the firefighters. Those of Muret quickly arrived on the spot supported later by those of the barracks of Cazères.
The gendarmes came to see the scale of the disaster, as did two deputies to the mayor of Lherm, Brigitte Boyé and Christophe Exposito.
At nightfall, the firefighters still intervened with their water cannons, helped by farmers who brought water with their large, well-filled tons.
The smoke persisted on Saturday night
Throughout the evening, large plumes of smoke blown by the wind flooded the plain with a pungent smell of burning. This is a major inconvenience that the neighborhood and the inhabitants of Lherm and the surrounding area will have to endure and which could last for several days.
Philippe Gajan still wonders how a disaster of such magnitude could have happened. Such a catastrophe never happened.
