To the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a human infection with a novel influenza A virus in a child from Wisconsin. The patient, a child under the age of 18, was infected with a variant of the influenza A (H1N1) virus A (H1N1) v virus swine flu. The child was not hospitalized and fully recovered from his illness. Investigation into the source of the infection revealed that the patient had direct contact with pigs.
No human-to-human transmission has been identified in connection with this patient.
This is the first infection with swine influenza A (H1N1) v virus detected in the United States in 2021 and the third new infection with influenza A virus (one A (H3N2) v virus and two A (H1N1) v virus that occurred during the 2020-2021 season.
Viruses swine flu :
They do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with influenza viruses that normally circulate in pigs and not in humans have been observed. When this happens, these viruses are called “variant viruses”.
Infections with A (H3N2) v and A (H1N1) v viruses have been mainly associated with prolonged exposure to pigs at agricultural fairs. Limited human-to-human spread of this virus has also been detected in the past (Iowa, West Virginia), but no sustained or community spread has been identified to date.
