President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that the municipality of Calakmul, in Campeche, it’s like “the New York of the Mayans”, because he assured that it was a city with important ceremonial centers and tall buildings.
In his morning conference from Campeche, the president affirmed that it is “one of the most beautiful cities” in Mexico, having archaeological sites such as Edza, among other places such as Champotón and Calakmul.
He also stressed that it is one of the safest states, registering only seven homicides a month on average.
“It is a very safe state, they have an average of seven homicides per month, in Campeche, and we are talking about a crime that does not have a black number, which has to do with what actually happens. It is a working people, a people with a lot of culture and full of history It is like visiting Campeche, one of the most beautiful cities in the country, a walled city in the world.
“It has places like Edzna but there is also Calakmul, which is like the New York of the Mayans, they are ceremonial centers, towering buildings,” he said.
He recalled that he visited the state to commemorate the Chakán Putum victory, in the Naval Sector of Champotón, accompanied by the President of Bolivia, Luis Alberto Arce, whom he received yesterday at the National Palace.
“Today the battle of the so-called bad fight or good fight is commemorated, however you want to interpret it, the important thing is that today in Champotón we are going to remember the heroism and resistance of the native peoples against the colonial invasion.
“The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, is going to accompany us in this act. At the end of this conference we are going to go to the archaeological zone of Edzna and then to Champotón,” he said.
