Astronomers Tracing the Mystery of the Ninth Planetary Existence

Solopos.com, JAKARTA – The ninth planet is still a mystery and for astronomers it is an interesting thing to find the answer to. Quoting Detikinet, Sunday (18/4/2021), Percival Lowell, a travel writer and businessman in the 19th century, decided to become an astronomer after reading a book about Mars. Since then, he’s made a number of wild claims regarding astronomy.

Quoted from BBC, one of which is Lowell’s wild claim is that he was determined to find Planet Ninth in the solar system or Planet X. At that time, this planet was thought to be responsible for the deviating orbits of the planets located far from the Sun, Uranus, and Neptune.

Even though he never managed to see it, the search for Planet Ninth had taken the last ten years of his life. After experiencing several mental breakdowns, Lowell died at the age of 61 on November 12, 1916. What Lowell did not know was that the search for the planet is still continuing, with slight changes, to this day.

Fourteen years later, on February 18, 1930, a young astronomer was looking at two photographs of the starry sky, when he saw a point in between. He had found Pluto, which was then thought to be the mysterious Planet X.

Unfortunately, Pluto is not the planet Lowell is looking for. Pluto isn’t big enough to pull Neptune and Uranus out of their orbits. Pluto is just an accidental intruder, who happens to be in the area.

The search for Planet Ninth continues. Various studies so far have concluded that this planet has 10 times the mass of Earth, and its location is 20 times farther than the distance between the Sun and Neptune, which is the outermost planet in the solar system. Chances are, the temperature on the planet is very cold.

Doesn’t Exist

However, many years have passed and astronomers have not found any evidence of the image of the Ninth Planet. It is estimated that even if this planet existed, it would be small and so far away that it would be difficult to detect it.

Recent research from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania suggests a Ninth Planet may not exist. Their careful survey using an observatory in Chile found absolutely no evidence.

“The only way to prove that the planet does not exist is to look for every corner in the sky and can not find it,” said scientist from the University of Regina, Samantha Lawler.

Another theory has suggested that the Ninth Planet does not exist but is actually an ancient black hole. Ancient black holes are tiny black holes that scientists believe formed in time Big Bang or the beginning of the universe. Only time will tell whether a modern-day search with more sophisticated technology will be more successful than Lowell’s.
