While his San José Sharks team are far from being able to compete for the Stanley Cup, Patrick Marleau made NHL history this Saturday against the Minnesota Wild.
Record matched
1767 games. That alone is the number of games played by Patrick Marleau in the NHL. A figure which thus comes to equal the record of Gordie Howe and which Marleau should pulverize to reach a mark beyond the 1,800 games played in the major league of ice hockey. The 42-year-old Canadian left winger was drafted to his San José team in 1997, a second draft pick at the time. 1,767 matches including 175 in the playoffs for the one who was crowned double Olympic champion in 2010 and 2014 but also selected for the All-Star game twice. A legendary career, with this 23rd season, the 21st for San José (two seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs between 2017 and 2019). Only a Stanley Cup is missing for Marleau to be a legend in his sport, a trophy he almost won, losing 4-2 in the final to Pittsburgh in 2016.
