KUPANG, KOMPAS.com – Provincial Government of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) asked the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) immediately go down to do research related to the emergence of a new island in Rote Ndao Regency, after the Seroja hurricane that hit the area last week.
This was conveyed by a spokesman for the NTT Provincial Government, Marius Ardu Jelamu to Kompas.com in Kupang, Saturday (17/4/2021) night.
“Indeed, an island appears on Rote Island, so it is necessary to do geological scientific research. We hope that researchers from LIPI will come to conduct scientific research related to the phenomenon of the emergence of this island,” said Marius.

According to Marius, until now the Rote Ndao Regency Government has not officially reported the emergence of a new island.
His party, said Marius, learned about this new phenomenon through mass media coverage.
According to Marius, the existence of the new island has raised a number of speculations.
Among them is the possibility that the island emerged as a result of the influence of high waves accompanied by tornadoes during the Seroja storm.
“Is it when Seroja Storm passes the sea and at the same time the wind rotation creates a hole so that sediment from the seabed is lifted upwards to form a new island,” said Marius.
“We do not yet know whether the island that appeared was because underneath there was a pile of rubbish, or whether the land was carried away from the mainland due to the tidal wave,” Marius continued.
Therefore, said Marius, it is necessary to conduct research by researchers to clearly determine the emergence of the island.
Marius said that all these are questions that need to be asked to stimulate scientific research in the future.
“We hope there will be research from LIPI researchers so that it can explain to the public because this is an interesting natural phenomenon,” he said.
