According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an organization that has defended animal welfare around the world for many decades, the sterilization of pets involves “removing the ovaries and uterus of a female pet”, while their castration is a procedure by which “the testicles of a male pet are removed.” On the surface this may seem unnatural and even cruel to these animals, but both animal organizations and veterinarians recommend doing it as soon as possible. But why exactly?
There are many reasons and in the pet section of the specialized health medium WebMD they list several of the most important. Like the lengthening of the life of these animals. “Spaying your pet between three and six months of age will virtually eliminate the risk of developing breast cancer and also prevent many different infections and cancers that occur in the uterus and ovaries.” To such an extent that, they say from WebMD, “spayed female cats live 39% longer and spayed female dogs 23% longer than their non-spayed counterparts“They are not negligible numbers.
Something similar happens with male pets. “Neutered dogs do not develop testicular cancer, which is common in older dogs that have not been neutered. They also have a lower risk of pancreatic cancer and their life expectancy increases up to 18%,” they explain from WebMD. The case of cats is no different. Generally speaking, the health of both animals improves. But that longer life expectancy in neutered pets also has a lot to do with aggressiveness and libida. After all, both neutered cats and dogs they are less likely to leave home in search of other animals.
This logically avoids many risks such as fights against those other animals, run over or falls into the void from windows or balconies. In general, say the experts at WebMD, neutered pets do better since the removal of the testicles stops the production of testosterone, which is behind many aggressive behaviors. That is why “they are less prone to territory marking behaviors such as pissing in the house or trying to mount everything they come into contact with.” In other words, and since they do not go into heat, they will be more satisfied and relaxed.
In addition, from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals they also appeal to the fight against the overpopulation of pets as a reason for spaying or neutering. “Every year millions of cats and dogs of all ages and breeds are euthanized or suffer like quiet animals. These high numbers are the result of unplanned offspring that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering. “Oh, and no, these processes will not make your pet fat. With exercise and controlled food consumption it should be just as great as ever .
