Climate: EU will approve law to end CO2 emissions in 2050 | Europe up to date | DW

The Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, assured on Wednesday (04.14.2021) that during the Portuguese presidency of the EU, which ends on June 30, “the first climate law” will be approved, which will include the objective of achieving the carbon neutrality in 2050.

During the presentation in Lisbon of a future circular line for the Portuguese capital’s metro, Costa recalled that in 2016 Portugal was “the first country in the world” to take on the challenge of achieving carbon neutrality in 2050, a commitment that the EU subsequently assumed .

The “battle” to end CO2 emissions “is won or lost in cities,” said the Portuguese president, since 75% of carbon dioxide emissions are emitted in cities. For this reason, he argued, we must “improve the energy efficiency of buildings.”

António Costa also explained that to achieve such neutrality investment in public transport is necessary, in order to promote “sustainable mobility” in cities.

“It is essential to look to the future with conviction and certainty,” he insisted, in order to condition a paradigm shift in the way of life that ends emissions.

On November 28, 2018, the European Commission (EC) presented its long-term strategic vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate-neutral economy until 2050. (efe)
