FEMA Offers Funeral Support for Deaths Caused by COVID

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, announced on Monday, April 12, the opening of a telephone line to request financial reimbursements for funeral expenses related to COVID-19 in deaths registered as of January 20, 2020.

As of mid-April, San Diego County has had more than 3,600 deaths from COVID-19; In the country there have been more than 563 thousand deaths from this disease.

In addition to the pain that each loss has left, families have had to face funeral expenses to fire their loved ones, something that could be costly in the United States.

The National Association of Funeral Directors considered in 2019 that the national median price for a funeral with viewing and cremation that year was $ 5,150; But that figure can easily exceed $ 10,000, when you add other related expenses.

To be eligible for FEMA funeral assistance, the death must have occurred in the United States, the death certificate must state that the death was attributed to COVID-19, and the applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The citizenship or immigration status of the deceased person is not a relevant factor in granting the refund.

The applicant must submit documents such as receipts or contracts for funeral expenses that include their name, the name of the deceased, the amount of the funeral expenses, and the dates they were incurred. .

The assistance will help with the expenses for funeral services and burial or cremation, including transportation and transfer of the remains, coffin or urn, burial plot or cremation niche, marker or tombstone, services of officiants or clergy, organization of the funeral ceremony, use of funeral company equipment or personnel, cremation or burial costs, costs associated with the issuance and certification of multiple death certificates, and additional expenses required by any verifiable state or local government law or ordinance.

Each applicant may submit multiple applications, assistance is limited to a maximum of $ 9,000 per funeral and a maximum of $ 35,500 per applicant, the agency reported.

Those interested in applying for support should call 1 (844) 684-6333 Monday through Friday from 7 am to 7 pm to start their application process or review the website from the agency for more information.

So far there is no deadline to submit an application.
