Martin Truex Jr. on pole in Richmond ahead of Denny Hamlin

Victorious at Martinsville last Sunday, Martin Truex Jr. will start from pole in Richmond for the ninth race of the season in the NASCAR Cup Series.

A strong man on the short tracks in recent seasons in the NASCAR Cup Series, Martin Truex Jr. could well improve his performance this weekend at Richmond, since he will start from pole. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will share the first row of the starting grid with Denny Hamlin.

Absent from Victory Lane after the first eight races, Denny Hamlin showed unfailing consistency. This allows him to occupy the leader’s chair with a comfortable lead.

Hendrick Motorsports has been absent from Victory Lane in Richmond since 2008 and a success for Jimmie Johnson. It places two of its drivers in the second row, Chase Elliott and William Byron.

Joey Logano, Kyle Larson are in the third row. Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch complete the top 10 on the starting grid.

Thirty-eight drivers will be at the start of this race, including Austin Cindric. The latter is taking part in his third race of the season at the wheel of the # 33 Ford of Team Penske. He will start from last place.
