Riding on bicycles, more than 50 protesters gathered near the Barclays Center to protest the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old African-American who was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis last Sunday.
According to one of the participants: “Almost the same city, the same thing happens, that a black man is killed by a policeman and he has no weapon or any reason to be treated with weapons or a taser”.
This event has caused protests and looting in the town of Minneapolis where the events took place on Sunday. The video taken from the body camera of Kim Potter, the police involved shows that the agent intended to draw her immobilizer pistol but, allegedly, she would have made a mistake and shot the young man.
But protesters in Brooklyn do not excuse the police officer: “She had worked as a police officer for 26 years. I mean, she has years of experience. How can a person with 26 years of experience make a mistake.”
This Wednesday the police officer involved, Kim Potter, and the head of the Police Department in that town, Tim Gannon, resigned.
Several protesters showed their frustration that these events occurred practically a year after the murder of George Floyd at the hands of an officer. And for that reason, they say that they will not let the event be forgotten: “I feel bad that it happens again. And I will be here in the streets calling for things to change; but, honestly, without tears … No I can every time. “
Some more wonder why a traffic violation ended in the death of a young family man: “Daunte Wright was a father, a son. My brother is 20 years old. And today I was thinking in my room that he could have been my brother. “.
After half an hour of speeches, the protesters left for other parts of the city. The protest was attended by Eric Adams and Andrew Yang, mayoral candidates.
