Wolfsburg’s CDU wants the base to vote on candidates for chancellor

The CSU presidium is for Markus Söder as candidate for chancellor, the CDU presidium spoke out on Monday for Armin Laschet – both are not surprising. But who is supposed to defend government headquarters in Berlin for the Union in the federal election in September after 16 years as chancellor? Wolfsburg’s CDU leadership is still a little undecided.

CDU district chairman Christoph-Michael Molnar: He advocates waiting for the mood of the Union faction in the Bundestag.
Which: CDU Wolfsburg

The youngest of the Christian Democratic leadership in Wolfsburg, district chairman, expresses himself very diplomatically Christoph-Michael Molnar. “The meeting of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag will provide an initial picture of the mood,” he says, “and I will be waiting for this picture with anticipation.” In his view, a “new beginning for the Union” is possible with both candidates: “I have confidence in both, all currents and to bring together individuals of the Union and to stand up for a strong Germany, ”says Molnar, who also notes that both enjoy a high reputation within the party.

Group chairman Peter Kassel (CDU): He is in favor of a member survey. What you want to do if CDU and CSU members only vote according to party affiliation of the candidate can then be decided retrospectively in case of doubt.

In which party is, however, a not entirely unimportant question in the case of the CDU and CSU union. “Why don’t we all show what we want through a member survey? there would still be enough time until Pentecost ”, says the councilor and CDU parliamentary group leader Peter Kassel. He still wants to think about how he would vote himself then. As bosses in their federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, both of them have finally proven that they can govern. But whoever is more likely to have a majority of the two, Kassel has to “go into it again”, he says. “No matter who: I expect reliability,” emphasizes Kassel and jokes: “As a candidate for chancellor, however, I am not only available.”

Dennis Weilmann: “Personally, I have had more contact with Markus Söder so far.”

“I would be happy if the members were more involved,” says Dennis Weilmann, Candidate of the CDU for the post of mayor in Wolfsburg, which will also be filled in September. In any case, the party-internal grassroots democracy works very well in the CDU candidate selection at the municipal level. On a personal level, says Weilmann, he has had more contact with Markus Söder so far. “A good friend worked very closely with him,” says City Councilor Weilmann, who studied in Göttingen and has already worked as head of communications for both the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice in Hanover and the city of Wolfsburg.

Angelika Jahns: “At the moment I think Söder is the stronger.”

And what does the former member of the state parliament and former district chairwoman say Angelika Jahnswho, like ex-CDU leader Angela Merkel in the federal government, has already placed her top positions in the party in the hands of younger successors? “I guess that Laschet can bring the Union together, but at the moment I think Söder is the stronger one who has a clear edge,” she analyzes. “Everyone has to prove themselves and has positive and negative characteristics.” The question remains, what the sister parties need now.
