JERUSALEM, April 12 (Xinhua) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel would never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons.
“We both agree that Iran should never have nuclear weapons. My policy as Prime Minister of Israel is clear: I will never allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons. nuclear capabilities, “Netanyahu said in a joint statement with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, visiting Israel.
Iran has repeatedly denied any intention to acquire nuclear weapons, and says its nuclear facilities are strictly for civilian use.
Austin said the United States and Israel “will maintain close cooperation.”
The US official hoped that the United States and Israel could work together to “find a way to achieve lasting peace” in the Middle East, especially after the normalization agreements signed between Israel and some Gulf countries.
The comments were made in the aftermath of an attack on the Iranian nuclear facility at Natanz, which Iran blames on Israel.
Mr. Austin arrived in Israel on Sunday for a two-day visit. This is the first official visit to Israel by a senior official in the Biden administration. The visit comes as the White House has just participated in indirect talks on a possible return of the United States to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.
