Rabat – The unpredictable nature of Covid-19 and the slight relative slowdown in the national vaccination campaign are among the reasons that led the government to toughen restrictive measures during the month of Ramadan, the Chief said Monday in Rabat. government, Saâd Dine El Otmani.

Speaking at a joint plenary session of the two chambers of parliament, devoted to the presentation of data on the epidemiological situation in the Kingdom, Mr. El Otmani added that this decision was also dictated by the worrying epidemiological developments recorded in a number of neighboring countries, especially with the emergence of news affecting the Kingdom, spreading to several regions.

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, the health and security authorities concerned have raised the level of alert, said the Head of Government, informing that the National Scientific Commission, which had held two meetings on March 11 and 06 April 2021 to study the national epidemiological situation and assess the risks it presents, unanimously recommended the extension, during the month of Ramadan, of the preventive measures currently in force.

The objective, explains Mr. El Otmani, is to protect citizens from the risks of a new wave and limit as much as possible the negative effects in the event of the outbreak of this new wave.

This decision was taken and announced a week before the month of Ramadan in order to allow citizens, traders, businesses and service providers to make the necessary arrangements, he said, explaining that the decision aims to preserve the health of citizens and improve the epidemiological situation, in parallel with the progress of the vaccination campaign.

This “proactive” decision was taken in order to avoid the scenario of the previous Eid Al Adha festival, which saw an increase in cases of contamination, continued the Head of Government.

Welcoming the respect by citizens of the measures decided by the public authorities to fight against the pandemic and its effects, he called for continuing in the same vein, respecting the preventive measures and barrier gestures, in particular in the means of transport and shops which are very busy before and during Ramadan.
