Belgian mothers in Syria want to give up children and ask for repatriation

Mother ME (51) and daughter YE (30) moved to Syria in 2014, where they joined IS. YE then took her son with her, and her mother ME took another daughter from a second relationship.

YE’s son was repatriated in December. It was the first time that a Belgian mother gave up a child in the camps to have it transferred to Belgium. He is staying with the father in our country. YE is now also pushing for the transfer of two other children from their relationship with a Swiss jihadist in Syria.

YE’s mother, ME, wants to give up her youngest daughter for repatriation. That girl was born in Belgium and is 9 years old. Their question came to the Belgian government through Georges Dallemagne, Member of Parliament for cdH, who previously met ME and YE in camp Roj, in north-east Syria. According to him, a concrete incident precedes it.

“The tent of ME and her daughter has burned down. They were able to escape and move to another tent, but are still in shock. ”

Their tent turns out to be set on fire by a child in the camp. Compared to Al Hol, Roj has been known as a quieter camp, with more control.

‘Violence Increased’

“They say the violence has increased dramatically,” says Dallemagne. “The panic is so great that these women are asking Belgium to repatriate those three children as soon as possible, regardless of their own fate. Those children are in danger. ”

Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmès (MR) does not yet want to comment on this “individual file”.

At the beginning of March, the Belgian government decided to work on the repatriation of children up to the age of 12 and to deal with the transfer of mothers on a case-by-case basis. This will not be for immediate, due to Ramadan, but mainly due to a lockdown in North-East Syria, after a wave of corona infections has also reached the camps.

From info from The morning on The evening it appears that two Belgian women in camp Roj are infected with corona. One of them had a PCR test and received her result this weekend: positive.

“They have had the typical symptoms for two weeks,” confirms Gerrit Loots, the VUB professor who has already visited the camps several times. “It proves there is a corona outbreak.”
