Before joining FC Barcelona, Neymar could have signed up for Real Madrid or Chelsea. In an interview with L’Equipe, Wagner Ribeiro explained why the PSG star had refused a transfer to these two clubs.
Sparkling under the colors of Santos, Neymar migrated toEurope and the FC Barcelona in the summer of 2013. And yet, the Brazilian star could have left the Brazil much earlier. When he was only 13 years old, Neymar came close to joining the Real Madrid, but he and his father ultimately decided not to answer the merengue call according to Wagner Ribeiro. As his former agent stated, Neymar also missed an opportunity to join Chelsea in 2010. “His test at Real Madrid? He stayed there for 20 days with his father and me. He was 13 years old and had caused a sensation. Everyone wanted him at Real and they were prepared to pay him well for it. But Marcelo Texeira (note: the president of Santos) called me and offered a new contract. (…) His father thought it was better to stay in Brazil. (…) Neymar did not want to be away from his mother and his sister. A possible departure for Chelsea in 2010? We were in New York before his first selection (against the United States). We met with representatives of Chelsea. They wanted to, offered a lot of money, but Neymar didn’t want to go. The “Neymar project” launched by Santos? The leaders had to react to compete with the European offers (Juventus, Bayern). They arranged a meeting and told him that by staying in Santos he would become a national idol, a myth, who could succeed Ayrton Senna in the hearts of Brazilians. They had prepared their shot well and had asked Pelé to call during the meeting. Neymar’s father was very sensitive to this phone call. It was decisive.
