Is commerce going too far?

Crossover events in Fortnite started out as special events and highlights. It’s now a lot of collaborations that Epic has brought into play. But what does the community think about all the collabs? Is that still cool or is it slowly going too far?

So it is now with the crossovers in Fortnite: Everyone should have noticed by now that Fortnite likes to close collaborations with popular culture brands such as Marvel Avengers, the Borderlands game or Star Wars and bring them into play. If you look at the crossovers, over time there have been quite a few.

Sometimes the collaborations are rather small and don’t really affect the game. But sometimes entire seasons are dedicated to the collabs: So it was in Season 4 Chapter 2, where you could unlock the superheroes of Marvel in the Battle Pass and even the live event was connected to the Marvel universe.

Battle Royale, Creative Mode and Party Royale – All of them have already had crossovers

How do the crossovers take place? The crossovers that take place in Fortnite have different variants. Sometimes they take place in the different modes of Fortnite, like an island in creative mode, which is completely dedicated to Lara Croft from Tomb Raider – there Fortnite suddenly plays very differently than usual.

The newest mode, Party Royale, is mostly used to promote collabs. Concerts by famous stars and musicians are performed on the stage and film premieres can even be seen on the big screen.

But most of the collaborations take place in Fortnite’s main mode: the Battle Royale. Be it a new emote that shows the dance and music of a famous star or a skin that comes straight from another universe. Even entire seasons have been dedicated to collabs.

The crossovers in Fortnite can be small and meaningless, but sometimes they can’t be avoided.

Is that still cool or is it going too far?

What good are such crossovers anyway? The crossovers definitely expand the target audience in Fortnite. When crossovers happen, they associate games and brands with Fortnite.

This attracts fans of these brands who would otherwise not play Fortnite. People who have never heard of Fortnite, or even really disapprove of it. But when people see that their favorite game or singer is suddenly represented in Fortnite in some way, it may be worth taking a look.

Not only can Epic reach more people, it can also make a profit. Because players often tend to grab their wallet when a special, exclusive skin is offered in the item shop. The peculiarity of the skin and the risk that the skin will never appear again in the Fortnite item shop afterwards can be a convincing argument for a purchase. This is also called “FOMO” – the fear of missing out on something.

From the perspective of Epic Games, the many collaborations with major pop culture brands are a step towards creating a virtual world of their own in Fortnite: a kind of “metaverse”. That’s what Epic boss Tim Sweeny told Business Insider – if Fortnite develops, it should “develop into more than a game.”

This also means that players go to a virtual concert in Fortnite, watch films in Fortnite or experience an event for the new Star Wars film.

But are players really so happy about the crossovers or is it slowly becoming too much when you can sometimes hardly avoid the collabs?

This is how the community thinks of the crossovers

Crossovers offer many possibilities and can reach different players and fans. Opinions on the collabs also differ in the community. Some find the collaborations very cool, others just find them annoying. But it also depends on the situation and how the crossover affects the game itself.

In a reddit thread, the player Silver-Menace started a discussion on the crossovers with the claim: “Crossovers are cool when they influence the game themselves.” This thread gathered over 100 comments discussing the topic of crossovers in Fortnite (via reddit). Here are a few opinions of the players:

  • “I think crossovers are cool if they don’t affect an entire battle pass. Just give us events that last a few days or a week at the most. “
  • “Crossover skins are still better than anything else they’ve been bringing to the item shop lately.”
  • “In my opinion, they are just overdoing it now. Don’t get me wrong, I like her [die Crossover], but if they only focus on that, then it just seems repetitive. “
  • “It’s just lazy and players missed it when Fortnite bothered with their own skis.”
  • “Marvel X Fortnite before Chapter 2 is the best example of this [für die ursprüngliche Aussage]. In Season 4 we received the Infinity Glove as an item and Thanos was a present hazard during the rounds. Later in Season 8 (I think) we had a huge event with Marvel skins and a whole new, well-designed LTM with challenges and rewards. Now it’s just: Hey look, this is Thor! Here you have an Ironman blaster! Look, it’s Master Chief! “

The crossovers themselves don’t really seem to bother most, but it seems like it’s already too much of a good thing for some. It could be because there are already too many such events and therefore the surprise effect is no longer so great. Such collaborations used to be something completely new and therefore so exciting, but now it seems to be part of everyday life at Fortnite.

Opinions will probably remain divided, because some have fun with it and maybe the others will suddenly be convinced of the crossovers when their favorite hero suddenly appears in Fortnite.

The next collaboration with DC and Batman is already being planned

Fortnite itself seems to be happily continuing with its crossovers, as the next big collaboration with DC is already planned. The two companies join forces and bring out an entire comic book series in which Batman lands on Fortnite Island. Exclusive rewards such as Batman skins await the players who buy the comics. So we can be curious whether the crossover will affect the game again here.
