With the aim of being one step closer to excellence and adapting to current changes in higher education and as part of the celebrations for its 131 years, the National University of Asunción (UNA) officially launched the XI Teaching Innovation Conference, to be held in the month of December, in virtual format. In the same framework, a webinar was held that revolved around educational innovation in times of pandemic.
The Teaching Innovation Conference has been held at the university uninterruptedly since 2009, in order to provide knowledge and experiences about teaching in higher education. In this sense, this year the Conference will be held during the month of December, according to the calendar that will be established according to the framework of the health contingency.

During the opening of the event, Luz Martínez, UNA’s academic general director, gave a brief presentation of the Conference, its history and contributions to national higher education. Then, on behalf of the Permanent Commission of Teaching Innovation of the UNA, he expressed his conviction in the path marked for educational development, since “only with good practices in the classroom can we advance in the best way,” he said.
Subsequently, Zully Vera de Molinas, rector of the UNA, congratulated the organizers and stressed the need to remain in constant adaptation, when teaching, especially currently, during the pandemic. In this sense, he stressed the effort of the university to “articulate initiatives to set up a platform (INNOVA LAB) and continue training our teachers.”
In its eleventh edition it will be distributed in two axes. The first is “Innovations in teaching developed and implemented until the Academic Year 2019”. While, axis two, which has, in turn, two lines of presentation, is subdivided into Teaching Innovation with “Implementation of the chair / subject / module / course / workshop during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
This section includes all teachers at the university. In addition, innovation in academic management, aimed at the academic departments of each academic unit at UNA.
The innovations must be framed in: virtual teaching; teaching methodologies; Orientation and tutorial; career practices; educational practices; postgraduate teaching and inclusive classrooms. For the first time, the event will be totally virtual.

On the other hand, the virtual seminar “Innovation in Higher Education in times of pandemic” was held, organized by the Permanent Commission on Teaching Innovation of the UNA. The webinar brought together international experts in the area of innovation, who presented on different points related to education, technology and pandemic.
At the beginning, Antonio Miñan Espigares, from the University of Granada, Spain, spoke about “Teaching innovation in times of pandemic.” Later, Dr. Félix Vásquez, from the Department of Hispanic Studies, at the College of Charleston, United States, recounted the experience “University education in times of pandemic at the College of Charleston”.
Finally, Dr. Heriberto Núñez, member of the Permanent Commission of Educational Innovation of the UNA, presented on “Technological competences in higher education”.
