The ministry says the following about this in a press statement:

In accordance with national and international protocol, Suriname is monitoring and investigating reports of post-vaccination concerns and such reports are taken seriously as safety is our primary concern. For each of these reported cases, a detailed investigation is conducted by the “Adverse Events Following Immunization Team (AEFI)”.

To date, it has been confirmed worldwide that no deaths following vaccination with the vaccine currently used in Suriname are associated with the vaccine. WHO’s Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GAVCS), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the United Kingdom’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) have investigated reports of possible serious adverse events, including deaths, and are all under review. concluded that there is no link with the vaccine. The benefits of using the AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the potential risks, including very rare serious events.

The risk of serious illness, death, or hospitalization from COVID-19 infection is extremely serious. Vaccination is one of the most important tools to prevent COVID-19 and end the pandemic in the near future.

Both the WHO and the European Medicines Agency advise that countries should continue to vaccinate with the AstraZeneca vaccine to save lives and prevent serious illness.

With Suriname now entering the third wave of the pandemic and with the presence of all three worrying variants of the virus, it is now even more important that individuals are vaccinated.

Since the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks, the Ministry of Health recommends that the AstraZeneca vaccine be continued to be used in the fight against COVID-19. This decision was taken after broad consultation with the Surinamese infectiologists and the Vaccination Technical Advisory Committee.

Vaccinated individuals are encouraged to report any concerns to their primary care physician or to seek immediate medical attention if they have severe symptoms such as persistent and severe headache, difficulty breathing, or persistent chest or abdominal pain.
