NASA prepares control aircraft for flight trials to Mars

THE MIND OF THE PEOPLENASA is preparing trials for the control aircraft to be flown to Mars.

The flight is planned to be carried out in a small Ingenuity helicopter on board Mars.

Reported Pikiran-Rakyat.com from The Guardian, the helicopter is expected to fly next week, as early as Wednesday, April 14, 2021.

Earlier, Ingenuity arrived at Jezero Crater on the red planet on February 18 after an eight-month journey that included nearly 300 million miles on the Perseverance rover.

Takeoff had been scheduled for Monday, however NASA said this was delayed after a technical problem during the rotor test, which means another test is now required before launch.

The helicopter has a height of 50 cm and a weight of 1.8 kg Earth, but due to the red planet’s lower gravity, it is only 680 grams across Mars.

The aircraft is armed with two rotors that rotate in opposite directions to lift the drone off the ground.
