French farmers fear failed wine and fruit harvest after severe frost | Cooking & Eating

The prime minister promised additional financial support, after his agriculture minister had already announced aid from a disaster fund for agriculture.

Hundreds of farms have been affected. Winegrowers in Burgundy or in the Rhone Valley expect an almost complete crop failure. For example, a winegrower in the Landes department speaks of at least 90 percent loss.

After fairly mild and spring-like temperatures in late March, the mercury dropped below zero for a series of nights. Among other things, farmers lit fires or lit candles in their fields to protect their vines from frost.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his solidarity with the affected farmers on Twitter: “We are and will remain with you.”
