Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The United States (US) has decided to deploy its maritime combat fleet to the Black Sea region. This action was taken just in case of the mobilization of Russian troops to the Donbass region which currently wants to separate from Ukraine.
According to Reuters, this information was shared by Turkey, which has control over the Bosphorus and Dardanelles Strait. These two straits are the key to entering the Black Sea region.
“Notification was sent to us 15 days ago via diplomatic channels that two US warships will pass through the Black Sea in accordance with the Montreux Convention. The ships will remain in the Black Sea until May 4,” the Turkish foreign ministry said.
Violence recently flared between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in Ukraine’s Donbass region. Germany has asked Russia to withdraw its troops, while Moscow has accused Kyiv of provocation.
The Donbass region itself has experienced a war of separatism starting in 2014. Those consisting of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic are demanding that they separate from Ukraine and join Russia. They were inspired by the Crimean Peninsula region that managed to do just that.
The territorial conflict between Ukraine and several pro-Russian separatist militias began in 2014. At that time the people of East Ukraine who were leaning towards Russia economically and culturally wanted President Yanukovych’s regime to cancel Ukraine’s entry into the territory of the European Union (EU), which is also an ally of the US. This is quite different from the people of West Ukraine who want Ukraine to join the European block.
Yanukovych finally refused to move forward to negotiations on Ukraine’s merger into the EU. This created massive public outrage in Kiev and Yanukovych could be overthrown. But in Eastern Ukraine, this is causing unrest, with people in the Eastern region who are disappointed with the overthrow of the Yanukovych regime turned away from Kiev and want to join Russia.
