Elche airport will be called “Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández” | Radio Elche

The government has made the decision to change the name of the Elche airport to that of “Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández”. It has been approved as part of the celebration of the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Oriolan poet that is taking place in Valencia with the presence of the mayor of Elche, Carlos González.

The change has occurred after the initiative presented in Les Corts by United We Can. The formation stated that the name of Miguel Hernández for the airport that serves the entire province “must unite the Valencian political forces in the defense of heritage, culture and the preservation of the figures that constitute us as a people.” The Minister of Transport, José Luis Ábalos confirmed today that his department has started the procedures to make the change of official name.

For his part, PSPV-PSOE has presented a Proposition No of Law that proposes to give up public spaces to show the work of Miguel Hernández as a tribute to the Oriolano poet. The Culture spokesperson of the group, Toñi Serna, from Elche, considers essential “that the work of the writer is always present in our cities and towns.”
