Australian cafe writes ‘annoying Asians’ on food bill, forced to apologize after racial note goes viral

Cafes and restaurants try to give a personal touch to the customer experience with a usual message or name signed from the mugs in order to make an impression. Sometimes it’s part of their strategy to have a callback value in the customer’s mind. Off late, it became a real thing. However, the ‘message’ from an Australian cafe was not well received by many, and he was forced to apologize after a photo of his food bill went viral on the internet.

The photo of Bill that read ‘two boring Asians’ was shared by Snapchat account Shay Hayston, owner of several restaurants in Brisbane. And even though he thought it was funny, many users called him out for being racial and called him appalling. A client named Alec Madara decided to take this incident further and messaged him calling the racial note. However, Shay allayed the concerns and said it was just a “joke”.

Alec was in no mood to drop the incident without any action and shared the screenshot of his conversation with Shay on social media platforms. In his posts in the conversation, Shay was adamant that the bill’s post was a joke and there was no need to make it a problem. However, after screenshots of the conversation appeared on the internet, many joined in condemning the racial behavior and the cafe owner was forced to apologize for the staff behavior.

Speaking about the incident to NY Post, Alec – the whistleblower in the case – said, “Was the intention to be racist?” I couldn’t say, it’s not for me to decide, the company can have their views and talk about it, I just know I didn’t like it.

According to a report, as of now, the social media pages of the cafe named Froth in Brunswick are closed to the general public.
