Ambassador Called the Military Occupied Myanmar Embassy in Britain

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Ambassador Myanmar for Britain said on Wednesday that parties linked to the Yangon military had “occupied” its embassy in London and barred its access to the building.

When asked the identity of the parties inside the embassy, Ambassador Kyaw Zwar Minn answered “defense attaché, they occupied my embassy”. The statement also confirmed the previous news.

Myanmar’s military junta is known to summon the ambassador last month after he released a statement urging them to release civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.

“Diplomacy is the only response and answer to the current impasse,” said Kyaw Zwar Minn in a statement tweeted by British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.

Protesters gathered outside the Myanmar Embassy in London on Wednesday when reports emerged the ambassador had been locked up and barred from entering the building.

Kyaw Zwar Minn told the Daily Telegraph media “when I left the embassy, they stormed in and grabbed it,”

“They said they received instructions from the capital, so they won’t let me in,” he continued, calling on the British Government to come along.

The UK Foreign Office said they were “seeking more information following the incident at the Myanmar Embassy in London.”

Britain has been a staunch critic of Myanmar’s military since they seized power in February. Last week, Britain increased sanctions against businesses whose business is part or all of the generals’ business.

The Myanmar ambassador told AFP that he would remain outside the building “all night”, explaining that “this is my building”.

London Metropolitan Police said they were “aware of the protests” in the Mayfair neighborhood, and public order officers had also been deployed there.
