By the fourth quarter of 2022, fiber optic connections are to be laid directly in the houses for around 42,000 households in the two districts of Bockenheim and Sachsenhausen – Nord.

This enables bandwidths of up to 1 GBit / s (gigabits per second).

The city of Frankfurt am Main and Deutsche Telekom jointly broke ground for this common goal today. Telekom alone bears the expansion costs.

The construction work is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2022. The fiber optic cable comes from the exchange via the distribution box in the sidewalk area directly into the customer’s house. This technology is called “Fiber To The Home”, or “FTTH” for short. In the course of the work, around 860 kilometers of fiber optic cables are to be laid and 115 fiber optic network distributors installed.

This is done in road sections. As soon as a section is completed, the residents can already book and use the newly built fiber optic terminations.

Expansion with all technical possibilities

Together with the city, Telekom will do everything possible to cope with the expansion quickly and effectively using the most modern technical options, while keeping the disruption for citizens and traffic as low as possible.

City councilor Jan Schneider is happy about the project: “Frankfurt am Main already has an excellent broadband infrastructure. However, since the bandwidth requirement is continuously increasing, investments in the digital infrastructure are still indispensable. The expansion of the fiber optic network is of particular importance here, as this technology enables very high transfer rates for uploads and downloads. Against this background, I very much welcome the fact that Telekom in Frankfurt will begin to upgrade its network to the latest fiber optic technology right into the houses ”.

Hartmut Müller, responsible regional manager for infrastructure sales at Telekom, is also looking forward to the expansion project: “The fiber optic connection offers all possibilities for digital applications: such as home office or video streaming. It is also suitable for telemedicine and smart home. Citizens in both parts of the city can already register online for a fiber optic connection from Telekom. We are also looking forward to a good cooperation with the city of Frankfurt. ”

The way to the new connection – what customers can already do

Citizens who live in the expansion area and who already opt for a fiber optic house connection can already register.

For this purpose, the details of the house owner or the property management are required if customers live to rent. Homeowners can also register if they want to upgrade their property with a fiber optic connection. There is a special offer for the owners, if they decide now – they get the connection in the house free of charge and save around 800 euros. ”
