Survey of Saiful Mujani Research Center (SMRC) shows that Muslim respondents in Indonesia are divided in assessing the incidence of clashes between Laskar Pembela Islam (LPI) and the police that happened on the Jakarta-Cikampek Km 50 Toll Road, some time ago.
This survey data collection was carried out on 1,064 respondents with face-to-face interviews on February 28-March 8, 2021. Margin of error plus / minus 3.07 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent.
Researcher from SMRC Saidiman Ahmad said from initial findings that 62 percent of Muslim respondents in the survey were aware of the clash between members of the FPI laskar guarding Rizieq Shihab and the police.
“From those who know, 34 percent (about 21 percent of the Muslim population) believe FPI members who attacked the police and 31 percent (about 19 percent of the Muslim population) believe members of the police who attacked the FPI,” Saidiman said when presenting the survey broadcast on YouTube. SMRC TV, Tuesday (6/4).
The survey also found that 36 percent of respondents did not answer that question.
“The numbers are quite balanced, yes, the same. So it is actually the same between the residents who said the FPI attacked or the police who carried out the attack. Again, the residents were divided,” he said.
Saidiman continued, from those who knew about the clashes, there were 38 percent of the Muslim population or around 24 percent of the Muslim population, who considered that the police’s actions in the incident violated legal procedures that rely on human rights principles.
In addition, there are 37 percent or around 23 percent of the Muslim population who think police actions are in accordance with legal procedures that rely on human rights principles.
“Muslims are divided in assessing the incidents of clashes between FPI members and the police,” he said.
For information, the clash occurred around the Jakarta-Cikampek KM 50 toll road area, on Monday (7/12) in the morning. In this incident, six members of the FPI Laskar were shot dead by the police.
Two of them died during a gun battle, while four others were shot while in the car for fighting and trying to grab the officers’ weapons.
Human rights defenders then rated this case as unlawful killing or extrajudicial killings. The National Police responded by investigating the case and naming three policemen as suspects.
Even so, the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) Choirul Anam stated that the National Police had only implemented one of the four recommendations issued by his party regarding the shooting case on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.
“Of the four recommendations, only one recommendation seems to be working,” said Choirul in a meeting with Commission III of the Indonesian Parliament at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta on Tuesday (6/4).
He explained that one of the recommendations that had not been implemented was related to accountability. He admitted that he had reminded the Police on several occasions that the law enforcement process related to the FPI Laskar shooting case be carried out accountably in order to produce good results.
Meanwhile, he continued, another recommendation that the National Police had not implemented was related to firearms and cars.

“We have said several times the accountable process, please help the management of law enforcement be accountable so that the process can be better,” said Choirul.
To note, Komnas HAM issued four recommendations related to the shooting case of the FPI Laskar in early January 2021.
The first recommendation is that the shooting case of the FPI Laskar be continued to the criminal court. The second recommendation relates to the people who were in the two cars who were involved in the collision with the vehicle they were in at the time of the incident.
Komnas HAM requested law enforcement against the person in the Avanza with police number B1739PWQ and silver Avanza with police number B1278KJD.
The third recommendation is that the case of possession of firearms was allegedly used by the FPI Laskar when the incident was further investigated. Finally, Komnas HAM recommends a law enforcement process that is accountable, objective and transparent in accordance with human rights standards.
