In the series “Chicago PD” you play Samantha Miller, how could you describe this character?
She is Samantha Miller, the deputy superintendent and, for the unfamiliar, she started out as a police officer and over the years has become more sophisticated, more trained. He went to Quantico until he was promoted. I can describe her as “La Patrona”, but since she was like the people she is in charge of, then she has compassion for the police force, it is a difficult situation, because Hank Voight is “the boss” and Samantha Miller is the new boss.
How was the preparation for the character both physically and psychologically?
Well, I have to be an officer, I have guns, my badge, the protocols and it’s like entering a dangerous space with the whole life of a policeman and, on the other hand, Nicole is a little soft, she’s very mommy, but Samantha Miller she is very strong, very powerful, because she has always worked within a team of men. She is the woman among men, so she must have a lot of strength, so I had to really work to do justice to those police women.
Your character is new to the series, how did you get into “Chicago PD”?
Well this is a good group of actors and we are already in season 8, so they are a family and I am the new character, but I am also a new guest in this house. Everyone welcomed me and welcomed me with open arms, so it’s been a great time.
Did Nicole Ari Parker dream of being part of a police series?
Yes, I have watched the show long before I was part of the cast. I love the show, I love the writers and I have great empathy with the NBC family, I have always enjoyed the show, even when I was not on it; So when Eriq La Salle called me and asked if I wanted to put myself in Samantha Miller’s shoes, I said yes immediately.
What has the character of Samantha Miller meant to you as an actress?
I think it means more to me personally, than necessarily a contribution in terms of my artistic development. This season is about what is happening in the world and in America, among the people, the community and the police, so I feel blessed to tell the story of how reform and change should be made. At Chicago PD we want to show that things need to change inside and out, and it’s not going to be perfect, I’m only one character in a season, but the show is trying to examine how we can do better as a society.
How much is the character of Samantha Miller from Nicole Ari Parker and vice versa?
Samantha is always very serious. She likes her blue dresses, not a lot of makeup, no diamonds, because she must carry her pistol, and she’s always on duty, so she’s in attitude all the time. Maybe in that we are a little alike Samantha Miller and I.

I am always working on several productions simultaneously. My husband and I will probably produce some projects; I like to play different characters all the time. However, now Sam (Samantha Miller) is where I want to be, it’s my priority and I’m happy to be here.
