Despite the pandemic, patient care for seriously ill people in the region’s clinics must continue uninterrupted, because preparations made from donated blood have a short shelf life. Also on World Health Day 2021 – as on every working day – up to 40 extraction teams from the DRK Blood Donation Service North-East are on duty in five federal states to provide patients with safe blood preparations together with blood donors and voluntary DRK helpers to continuously secure the clinics in the respective region.

Regular blood donation helps patients who depend on blood supplements
All blood donation services in Germany – and worldwide – depend on the willingness of the population to donate to ensure long-term patient supply with blood preparations. Because blood still cannot be produced artificially, at the same time, preparations made from human blood are often the only treatment or cure for many diseases. Only those who are healthy can donate blood. The safety and health of the donors have the highest priority.
The International World Health Day has been celebrated on April 7th every year since 1949. A year earlier, on April 7, 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) was founded as a specialized agency of the United Nations. It has made the fight against diseases – especially infectious diseases – and the promotion of the general health of people worldwide one of its tasks. The global motto of the day of action in 2021 is: “Building a fairer, healthier world” – Equal health opportunities. A topic that should be drawn attention to, especially against the background of a global pandemic.
Current supply situation with blood preparations in the area of the DRK blood donation service North-East
The supply situation with life-saving blood preparations is currently stable, but the current uncertainty about the further development of the infection process can change the situation in the short term. Therefore, continuous blood donation is essential. One blood donation can help up to three seriously ill or injured people.
The aim is to care for seriously ill patients (Note: Covid-19 sufferers are usually treated Not with blood preparations) in the clinics in the region under all circumstances. In Berlin and Brandenburg alone, around 600 blood donations are required every working day to ensure patient care. Some blood components (platelets) that are obtained from donated blood as medication can only be kept for a maximum of five days, so it is important that donations are made continuously over the coming weeks.

- People with cold symptoms, fever, and diarrhea will be Not approved for blood donation. Likewise, people who have had contact with Covid 19 sufferers in the past two weeks or who have been abroad. It is requested that you do not visit the appointments in the first place.
- Blood donors should please carry their identity card, blood donation card (if available) and, if applicable, the invitation letter from the DRK blood donation service or the appointment confirmation and be able to show them on request
- People who have received a Covid-19 vaccination can donate blood the following day if they are symptom-free
Donate blood for sure
In order to keep the risk of infection for blood donors, staff and volunteers at blood donation appointments as low as possible, the relevant measures are constantly being adapted to the current pandemic phase. Currently, the measures consist of access control, brief medical history, measuring body temperature, hand and surface disinfection and the wearing of medical face mask by staff, volunteers and donors as well as the greatest possible isolation through distances throughout the blood donation process. All donors are given a medical protective mouth mask.
Also important to know: Blood donations will continue n i c h t examined for SARS-CoV-2. According to the RKI, transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through blood cannot currently be assumed because the virus cannot be detected in the blood of asymptomatic people. The main route of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is droplet infection. Testing of donations is therefore currently not practiced.

Who can donate blood?
Blood donors must be at least 18 years old and healthy. Those willing to donate with symptoms are not allowed to donate blood and are asked not to appear at appointments. The age of 65 should not be exceeded for the first donation. Blood donation is currently possible up to the 73rd birthday, provided the state of health allows it. During a preliminary medical examination, the suitability for donating blood is checked on a daily basis. Healthy men can donate up to six times within a year, women up to four times within 12 months. There are at least eight weeks between two donations. Please bring your ID card with you when donating blood!
