In March 2018, shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan decided to get baptized and make a confirmation. That is, to join the Anglican Church. This is done by Justin Welby, Archbishop of the Anglican Church.
As a child, Meghan was not baptized. Her father Thomas would not have wanted this because he and Doria did not believe the same.
Meghan’s choice to be baptized and receive confirmation raises questions. Is that mandatory within the royal family? That’s not it. Meghan probably did this out of respect for Queen Elizabeth, who is the head of the Anglican Church. Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, was baptized as a child. But she too chose to do the confirmation before marrying Prince William.
The baptism takes place in the Royal Chapel of St. James’s Palace, under the direction of Justin Welby. Meghan is said to have built a close bond with him through the multiple conversations she has with him before the baptism. Meghan is baptized in the presence of only Prince Charles, his wife Camilla and a number of friends. The water from the Jordan is poured over her head with a silver jug. In an interview later, Welby says: “It was beautiful, authentic and very moving.”
