Rookie Taylor Widener chilled San Diego’s powerful offense through six scoreless innings to score victory in his first major league start and David Peralta hit a two-run triple for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who beat on Sunday 3-1 to the Padres to avoid the sweep in the four-game series.
Widener (1-0) held the Padres on three hits and three walks, striking out five.
It was Widener’s 13th major league performance, after 12 relief jobs during the 2020 season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic. The 26-year-old right-hander made his major league debut July 25, pitching 1 2/3 inning without a run in Arizona’s 5-1 loss to the Padres at Petco Park.
The Padres avoided the shutout when Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his first homer of the season with two outs in the ninth inning off Chris Devenski, who scored the save.
Widener was hit by Jake Cronenworth’s right-hand miss with one out in the first inning, but stayed in the game and finished the inning in just five pitches.
For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 3-1 with scored, and Geraldo Perdomo 3-0. Venezuelans Peralta 4-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Asdrúbal Cabrera 4-0.
For the Padres, the Dominicans Tatis Jr. 4-2 with scored and RBI, and Jorge Mateo 1-0. Venezuelan José Marcano 1-0
