European Union (EU) seeks return of US President Joe Biden’s administration to an international pact to limit Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions
The United States will not take part directly in discussions involving China, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom.
But for the first time since US former President Donald Trump left the agreement unilaterally in 2018, there will also be a US delegation at the meeting.
Ladyran spoke to his Iranian counterpart, Javad Zarif, on Saturday and “welcomed the forthcoming resumption of discussions in Vienna on a nuclear dossier.”
The minister also “encouraged Iran to be constructive in the discussions in order to identify in the coming weeks what needs to be done to fully return to compliance with the agreement,” the statement said.
“France will participate in a pragmatic and at the same time insistent way.”
“I called on Iran to refrain from further breaches of its commitments in the nuclear area, which is likely to be detrimental to the dynamism of the resumption of discussions,” he added.
Speaking on Saturday’s telephone conversation with Ledria, the Iranian minister said on Twitter that he had urged France to “take a constructive stance on the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) in next week’s talks in Vienna”.
“I called on France to honor its commitments under the terms of the agreement and to stop complying with the illegal sanctions imposed by the United States,” Zarif added.
In 2015, Iran signed agreements with the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia, pledging to limit its nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.
The agreement is on the verge of collapse since then-US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 that the United States would withdraw from the agreement and renew sanctions against the Iranian economy. Following the US decision, Iran also began to withdraw from its obligations under the Pact.
Politico told the US proposal, which has not yet been finalized, to call on Iran to suspend some of its nuclear activities, such as work on modern centrifuges and uranium enrichment to 20% in exchange for easing US economic sanctions.
