An almost perfect copy of the 1985 game ‘Super Mario Bros’ was sold at auction for $ 660,000 (€ 561,000) at auction, making it the most expensive video game ever, according to the portal “The Verge”. The copy was one of the first packaged versions of games on sale in the United States, and remains in history as one of the most popular and most played video games ever.
Heritage Auctions, the company responsible for organizing the auction, told Ars Technica that the copy dates back to the end of 1986. It was purchased as a Christmas gift and has remained locked in a drawer for nearly four decades. “I never thought about it,” said the seller, who asked to remain anonymous at the auction house.
The 660 thousand dollars (561 thousand euros) for which this copy of the video game ‘Super Mario Bros’ was sold is impressive, given that the record for the sale of an item related to the video game industry was a prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation (console that never came to market), sold for $ 360,000 (€ 306,100) at auction last year.
More recently, a collector paid $ 156,000 to purchase an original copy of the 1988 ‘Super Mario Bros 3’ video game.
