Last vessels leave on Saturday from the Suez Canal | NOW

The last ships that had to wait in recent days for their passage through the Suez Canal will continue their journey on Saturday. The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) reports this. On Saturday, 85 ships will use the canal, including the 61 vessels still in line.

With the departure of the 61 ships, the last folds in the international logistics chain must be ironed out. About 10 percent of world trade is carried through the Suez Canal, a crucial route for trade between China and Europe.

Shipping traffic through the Suez Canal came to a standstill on 23 March because the 400 meter long container ship Ever Given had run aground. As a result, 422 vessels had to wait for their passage. This is expected to result in a loss of at least 1 billion dollars (850 million euros) in damage, the SCA said earlier.

On Friday evening, SCA Chairman Osama Rabie announced that the channel authority had launched an investigation into the cause of the Ever Given jam earlier this week. Possible causes have so far been sought in the strong wind and human error. Rabie expects to announce the results of the investigation shortly.
