Sony will close download stores for the PS3 and PS Vita this summer. The closure also applies to the older PSP. As a result, users of those consoles will no longer be able to purchase content on those platforms from this summer.
The PSN store for the PS3 and PSP will close on July 2, the one for the Vita will close on August 27, Sony says on the Dutch support page. It is still possible to buy ‘cross device content’ that also works on a PS4 or PS5; users can then also access the versions for PS3 or PS Vita.
Users without PS4 or PS5 who still have credit on their PSN account will not receive a refund. The money remains for when they buy a newer PlayStation. Downloading previously purchased games will still be possible after the closure, says Sony.
After the download stores have closed, it is no longer possible to purchase digital games or DLC for the relevant consoles.
Sony’s PlayStation 3 came out in November 2006 and has sold 87 million copies. The console went out of production four years ago. The PlayStation Portable was released in March 2005 and has sold around 81 million copies. The PlayStation Vita, which first appeared in December 2011, was less successful. It is estimated that some 15 million have been sold.
