The provinces of Manitoba and Quebec were the first to hear the new guidelines from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization and Health (NACI). In Canada, each province is responsible for its own immunization program.
“There is significant uncertainty about the benefits of using AstraZeneca vaccines in adults under the age of 55,” Howard Nhu, Deputy Chief Health Officer of Canada, told a news conference.
“We are currently pausing the use of AstraZeneca vaccine in adults under the age of 55 pending further risk-benefit analysis,” said Nhuju.
Officials called on Canadians who have received AstraZeneca vaccine in the past 20 days to consult a doctor.
The AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for use in Canada in February.
