Sturm coach Christian Ilzer in an interview: “I don’t just want to take part in the gondola”

weekend: Can you relate to the term “training association”?
Christian Ilzer: The fact is that we have to be successful in the table. On another level, we should also develop market value and make players better. One or the other should also bring the club money when they take the next step.

weekend: Sturm won both championship games against Salzburg this year. Can you keep up with such a force in the long run?
Christian Ilzer: If you want to beat a team that is superior to you in terms of quality, you have to have faith that you can win. You have to be active yourself. If you just stand in the back and hope that you can benefit from a mistake, that’s the wrong approach for me.

weekend: How important is Salzburg for the league?
Christian Ilzer: Salzburg has made a major contribution to Austrian football. Football has become more intense. The other teams had to adapt. As a result, the density in the league has increased extremely. You have to get almost 100 percent against every opponent to win. You also made a contribution to Austrian football becoming internationally acceptable.

weekend: The league is often underestimated in Austria. How bad is it really?
Christian Ilzer: If you look at the results of Salzburg, WAC and LASK in the international competitions, that’s impressive. We don’t have to hide there.

weekend: The master group has been fixed for a long time. What are your goals for the rest of the season?
Christian Ilzer: We want to use the international break to sit down with the team and define goals. An international starting place would be a nice reward. But we know that we still have to work on ourselves in order to reach the top 3 in terms of performance. In the master group you have to be at the limit every week to take countable items with you. I don’t just want to join the gondola and finish sixth.
