Against the Greens, the dangerous Macronist tactic – Liberation

Haro on the ecologists! Emmanuel Macron has been fighting against environmentalists for a while. But the choice of this confrontation takes these days a particular relief. While the majority and the green opposition will fight for three weeks on the climate law which comes under consideration this Monday at the National Assembly, several thousand demonstrators marched on Sunday throughout France. In the current pandemic context, this is proof that environmental concerns remain keen. For macronists, this law, built at the end of the work of the citizens’ convention for the climate, constitutes the cornerstone of the head of state’s green record. A text not up to the challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, will relentlessly denounce the environmentalists.

Classic, nothing but classic? Not only. The virulence of the attacks on the presidential camp, with Gérald Darmanin and Marlène Schiappa as chief gunners, proves that the presidential camp fears a new green success during the regional elections, after that of the municipal ones, and that this last ballot before the presidential election – if it takes place – definitively installs the greens at the center of the battle of 2022. It is therefore necessary to discredit the opponent, even if it means handling a necessarily unsubtle Kärcher, as was the case on the organic menus of the Lyon canteens, yet experienced by a macronist of the first hour (Gérard Collomb), or on the – more complex – affair of the financing of the mosque of Strasbourg.

The Macronian bet is actually quite clear. As the right is now weakening on its own, it can hit the green people to weaken the whole of the left, in particular by exacerbating its divisions on the question of republican values. The President’s strategy nevertheless entails risks: unbalancing his majority even more by making it right, discrediting the sincerity of his green transformation and above all appearing more as an anti-green tactician than as a strategic president up to the environmental challenges.
