WASHINGTON DC, KOMPAS.com – The United States on Saturday (27/3/2021) condemned the sanctions China against an American official and a member of parliament Canada related problems Muslim Uighur.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs AS Anthony Blinken, China’s actions “have only contributed to the growing international scrutiny of this genocide ongoing and crimes against humanity of Xinjiang“.

“We stand in solidarity with Canada, the UK, the European Union and other partners, as well as allies around the world in calling on (China) to end human rights abuses and abuses,” said Blinken, as from Reuters on Sunday (28/3/2021).

Beijing imposed retaliatory sanctions after the United States, European Union, Britain and Canada imposed sanctions earlier this week over what they say is a violation of the rights of Uighur Muslims and other Turkish minorities in China’s western region of Xinjiang.

UN rights activists and experts say at least 1 million Muslims have been detained in camps in Xinjiang.

Activists and some Western politicians accuse China of using torture, forced labor, and sterilization.

China has repeatedly denied all allegations of abuse and says its camps offer vocational training and are necessary to fight extremism.

Blinken’s statement came after Prime Minister Canadian Justin Trudeau slammed Beijing and vowed to defend human rights.

China sanctioned Canadian opposition lawmaker Michael Chong, deputy chair of the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development, and the Subcommittee on International Human Rights.

In February, he submitted a report concluding that the atrocities in Xinjiang amounted to crimes against humanity and genocide.

Beijing also said it would take action against the chairperson and co-chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom, Gayle Manchin and Tony Perkins.

Individuals under Beijing sanctions are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and Chinese citizens and institutions are prohibited from doing business with the three individuals or making any exchanges with subcommittees.

Chong, who is a member of Canada’s opposition Conservative Party, said he would “wear (the sanctions) as a badge of honor”.

“This shows that lawmakers are effective in drawing attention to the genocide of the Uighurs taking place in western China,” Chong said in a telephone interview.

Chong urged the Trudeau government to “officially recognize the Uighur genocide,” and said the sanctions would have no practical impact because he did not plan to travel to China.
