Police have arrested a suspected perpetrator and say there is no longer any danger to people in the city. The man is in his 20s and is known to the police from before.
No information has been received about the motive for the attack, which took place on Saturday afternoon local time, and little is currently known about the course of events.
Witnesses say they saw several, apparently random, people with knife wounds near each other.
Of the injured were a man, an older woman, a younger woman and a mother. A group of random people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, said Steve Mossop, who was right near the library when the attack took place, to AP.
Mossop says that he and his partner stopped the picture when bloody people came running.
– It seems that the perpetrator has only run in one direction. Everyone who got in the way was attacked, he said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau writes on Twitter that the victims are in his thoughts.
– My heart’s in Vancouver tonight. To all those affected by this violent incident: know that all Canadians have you in mind and want you to recover quickly from the injuries, he said.
