A ultramodern cleaning robot disinfects between the farewell meetings through the halls of the Bijnen funeral home in Vught. “It is the first time that this robot has been used in a funeral home,” says Rien Bijnen. “We’d rather spend more time with the people who come here than cleaning.”
Rien is beaming next to the disinfection robot. “We will see this way of disinfecting large spaces much more often in the future,” he says. “Soon after the corona pandemic is over, everyone will still be on the alert for viruses. For us it is especially important that we spend less time between the various funerals. The last year has been very busy.”

Due to the corona measures, it now takes a lot of time to disinfect the rooms with a cloth and disinfectant between farewell meetings of various deceased. This is much faster with the ‘light robot’.

The man-sized robot spreads a bright blue light. The device travels through the room like a robotic vacuum cleaner, with the difference that it disinfects not only the carpet, but the entire room. “The robot knows exactly where it is driving and reaches all places where people come,” says Rien proudly.

“UV-C light kills all viruses and bacteria.”
–
“The robot emits so-called UV-C light,” says Man Yong Toh van Ryberg, the inventor of the device. “UV-C is light that does not normally occur on Earth and that kills all viruses and bacteria. Fortunately, the device that we see during the demonstration today contains harmless blue fluorescent lamps, because UV-C light is also dangerous for humans. In the future you will encounter these robots in healthcare institutions, on cruise ships and flight terminals, for example. “
