BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – The EU has demanded a “credible roadmap” from Great Britain for the implementation of the agreements for Northern Ireland in the Brexit agreement. The European Commission announced on Friday evening after the meeting of a joint committee dealing with the so-called Northern Ireland Protocol. London should name “clear deliverable results and milestones” for the as yet incomplete or delayed implementation of rules and requirements.
The protocol stipulates that after the British exit from the European Union, some rules of the EU internal market will continue to apply to the British province of Northern Ireland. This should make controls at the border to the EU country Ireland superfluous. However, this created a goods border between Northern Ireland and the rest of Great Britain. Also because some supermarket shelves in Northern Ireland remained empty, London had unilaterally lifted some regulations. The EU is taking legal action against this./cmy/DP/he
