Climate change.- Biden invites 40 world leaders to his climate summit, including Pedro Sánchez

MADRID, 26 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has reported this Friday that he has invited 40 world leaders to the summit on climate change that will take place on April 22 through video conference, including the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez.

It is an initiative of Biden himself in an attempt to move away from the previous environmental policies carried out by the previous tenant of the White House, Donald Trump, and to strengthen an international alliance with the “main economies of the world to face the climate crisis “.

The White House statement advances that the United States will announce during the summit “an ambitious goal” to reduce emissions and prevent global warming by 2030.

At the same time, he has recommended to the rest of international leaders that they use the event “as an opportunity to determine how their countries will contribute to a more committed climate position.”

Among the issues to be discussed at the meeting, reports the White House, are “the economic benefits” of “the transition to a new clean energy”, investment in technologies that can help reduce emissions and adapt to climate change, as well as “addressing the global security challenges posed by change.”

In addition to Sánchez, among the guests are also the President of France, Emmanuel Macron; from South Korea, Moon Jae-in; from Canada, Justin Trudeau; the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel; the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, or the leaders of Russia, Vladimir Putin; and from China, Xi Jinping.

Among the invitations to representatives of Latin America are those of the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador; from Argentina, Alberto Fernández; from Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro; from Chile, Sebastián Piñera; or from Colombia, Iván Duque.

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan; or the Prime Ministers of India, Narendra Modi; from Japan, Yoshihide Suga; from Italy, Mario Draghi; or from Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, complete a list in which there is also representation of the leaders of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta; and Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari.

Furthermore, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, have also received the invitation.
