The European Medicines Agency today authorized the storage of the Pfizer / Biontech coronavirus vaccine at higher temperatures than previously allowed. This will facilitate its distribution, AFP reported.

In a statement, the EMA said it had given a positive opinion on allowing the transport and storage of vaccine vials at temperatures between minus 25 and minus 15 degrees Celsius (ie at temperatures of standard pharmaceutical freezers) for a period of only two weeks.

It is an alternative to long-term storage of vials at a temperature between minus 90 and minus 60 degrees Celsius in special freezers, the agency said. This should facilitate the rapid distribution of the vaccine in the EU by reducing the need for special refrigeration equipment for storage at very low temperatures throughout the supply chain, the EMA explains.

A similar decision was recently made by the US Medicines Agency.

Today, the EMA also approved two companies for the production of coronavirus vaccines, world agencies reported. These are the plant of the subcontractor of AstraZeneca – Halix in the Netherlands and the plant in Marburg / Germany / of Pfizer / Biontech. This is expected to increase vaccine supplies to the EU. The first deliveries of doses from the Halix plant to the EU can be expected by the end of the month, and the first from Marburg in early April. Halix’s plant is not new, while the one in Marburg is a new production site.
