NEW YORK CITY, KOMPAS.com – Global warming triggers the melting of the layers glacier faster. The impact could be catastrophic for human survival.
The scenario of a climate doomsday in the future is depicted dramatically in the film The Day After Tomorrow which was released in 2004.
Melted eternal ice sheet of Arctic Pole and South Pole Earth is triggered by heating up the Gulf Stream and North Atlantic currents, in that film triggers tsunami which drowned New York City and the surrounding area, which at the same time killed millions of people.
Sounds exaggerated? But reality shows that shrinking glacial layers in Alaska in 2015 triggered massive landslides and a massive tsunami 200 meters high when it hit the coast.
Not many people care and almost no coverage, because the disaster occurred in a remote area that is not inhabited by humans.
This means that if the catastrophic rupture of trillions of tonnes of ice sheet due to global warming does not have a direct impact on humans, hardly anyone will care.
If only a few small islands in the Pacific ocean are sinking, it is not considered a global problem.

Chain effect
Keep in mind, if the eternal ice sheet or glaciers on Earth that cover 10 percent of Earth’s soil layer melted very quickly, it would trigger a chain effect, as reported. DW Indonesia on Wednesday (24/3/2021).
To establish the context for the melting of this eternal ice sheet, scientists note that the rate of shrinkage of the perpetual ice sheet has increased by nearly 60 percent since the 1990s.
If stressed by the numbers, it includes 28 trillion tonnes of perennial ice sheet melted from 1994 to 2017.
The world’s largest ice sheet in Antarctica as well as the glacier layer in the world’s high mountains, have already lost half of their volume again.
Imagine, if all the melting of perpetual ice in the form of fresh water entered the sea and lowered the salt level of sea water, what impact would it have?
The balance of the Gulf Stream, which is a warm ocean current in the North Atlantic, which is one of the most important currents in the world, will be disturbed.
This will trigger a phenomenon extreme climate, in the form of tropical storms and hurricanes in the Mexican Bend region.
In addition, it triggered more frequent flooding and dryness on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Hundreds of millions of people will be affected.

The effect is more powerful
There will be a more powerful domino effect. The temperature at the Arctic will increase twofold as fast.
The giant “air conditioner” system that regulates the temperature of planet Earth will crash.
The hot temperatures not only melt the perpetual ice caps at the poles, but also weaken the air currents in the atmosphere called “jet streams”. Simply put, bad weather will hit more and more often.
The polar vortex phenomenon that recently froze parts of Europe and North America has a correlation with weakening jet streams in the polar regions.
Here’s a trigger scenario blow time suddenly in the film The Day After Tomorrow.
Cold weather may be welcome, amid global warming. But don’t forget, the arctic regions are heating up too.
This means that the ice sheet that used to reflect the sun’s heat energy from the earth, is no longer fully functional.
This triggers the oceans to absorb the heat. Unsurprisingly, in the winter of 2018, the ice sheet in the Bering Sea in Alaska reached its lowest level in 5,000 years.
The habitats of fish, seabirds, seals, penguins and polar otter are also disappearing as the eternal ice sheet melts.
Also, the rapidly melting of the permafrost in the Siberia region will trigger another climate catastrophe.
This phenomenon, marked by the appearance of mysterious craters in the Russian tundra, is an indication of the release of large amounts of greenhouse gases.
As is well known, the permafrost region is the largest carbon storage in the world.
Now, the Russian tundra is actually releasing greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and carbon dioxide which were trapped in eternal minus temperatures.
Some scientists predict, by the end of this century, about 40 percent of the permafrost area will disappear. Where? To the atmosphere of course. Which then triggers global warming again like a turbo engine.

The scenario of sea level rises tens of meters
If all the icing on South Pole which is the world’s largest proposal melt, the surface of oceans around the world will rise to 60 meters.
This is the end of the world for cities along the coast such as New York, Mumbai, London and also Jakarta. All will sink to the bottom of the sea.
But that’s just the Armageddon scenario. Do not panic! This phenomenon will not happen any time soon.
The most realistic mitigation at this time is that global warming will trigger a sea level rise of 2 meters by the end of this century.
This means that only about 350 million to 500 million people living in coastal areas will be affected.
Also another effect of melting glaciers in the mountains, about 700 million other people in mountainous areas, “only” will experience severe scarcity of clean water, as Chile or India has experienced today.
Or a total of about 2 billion people will face water shortages as well as starvation due to drought.

what else can be done?
Can we still make efforts to put the brakes on that disaster scenario? At least humanity must start to stop polluting the atmosphere with greenhouse gases that trigger global warming.
Of course this reversal process cannot be carried out and the results are visible overnight.
If it were assumed that all the world’s population stopped using fossil fuels starting today, about 30 percent of all the glaciers that remained today would still melt.
The UN’s target is that if the world by 2050 could decarbonize, about 30 percent of the mass of the glaciers could be saved by the end of this century.
The future of humanity regarding climate change is difficult to predict. Everything remains a scenario and modeling.
But, if the melting of eternal ice and glaciers could be slowed down, a catastrophic scenario like the one in the movie, will not look ridiculous to future generations.
