Thanks to preferential votes, three women are allowed to sit in the House of Representatives. They were actually too low on the candidate list and therefore seemed to grab a seat, but appear to have themselves received enough votes for a seat in Parliament.
Two of the three women with enough preferential votes were candidates for GroenLinks: Lisa Westerveld (photo) and Kauthar Bouchallikht are allowed to enter the Chamber at the expense of Suzanne Kröger and Paul Smeulders. At Volt, not Ernst Boutkan, but Marieke Koekkoek will join the fraction.
As a voter it is possible to break through the list order of a party with a preferential vote. Suppose a party gets ten seats, then in principle the first ten candidates on the list will sit in the House of Representatives.
More and more people are choosing to vote for a woman who is actually just too low on the list, so that this candidate can still take a seat in the House. In this way they hope to influence the male-female ratio in the House.
